As new and veteran artists alike continue to push the boundaries of Hip-Hop, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to predict how any track will sound from any given emcee. And that’s a good thing, of course, especially within a genre that’s still relatively young. Recognizing that is Kyle Rapps, a New Jersey native currently living in Mexico City who may have created his own sub-genre with new single “Michigan.”
The track is no doubt rooted in rap, but it also bounces with an electro strut. Part of the credit for that goes to producer Belief, who uses thick bass and driving percussion to fuel Rapps’ cadence. He captures the equally moody and clubby vibe of the instrumental, all while delivering bars that touch on the narrator’s struggle to remain faithful to his partner.
Despite wanting to stick around and be committed, dude constantly sneaks out and sows his oats with anyone who will give him the time of day. And yet, he always returns home to an understandably cold shoulder. While he should be a despicable character, Rapps makes him lovable with a hook that is sure to get stuck in your brain for the next week or so. “Michigan,” which is not affiliated with any forthcoming projects, can be streamed below courtesy of RESPECT., and can be downloaded through all major digital retailers (refer to links below).
