Army Reserve Officer by day & Beauty Queen by night. 26-year-old District of Columbia’s Deshauna Barber became the first woman ever to win the title of Miss USA, representing and working within the United States Army; making her the first woman to wear boots and a crown. Barber emotionally accepted the crown by 2015 Miss USA winner, Olivia Jordan this past Sunday. Barber wasn’t the only contestant whom had the crown in her view; 52 other ladies came out to Las Vegas at an attempt to grab their hands on the sparkly crown as well.
According to People, the Army Reserve officer spoke of her service on Sunday, giving a very powerful answer during the competitions interview portion of the show:
“As a woman in the United States Army, I think it was an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military, We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated and it is important that we recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States.” she said.
That was quite an answer. An answer that won her the crown to be Miss USA 2016. Barber is the daughter of a retired Army master sergeant and was commissioned as a Quatermaster Officer in 2011. So you can say representing the military services runs through the family and it’s a job that Barber seems to not only enjoy but take very seriously. Barber is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quatermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland and works full time as an IT Analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce. So she’s not just beauty but brains as well. Now that Deshauna Barber has won the title of Miss USA 2016 per US News she plans to take a break from her duties as Army Reserve Officer to focus on her newly assigned duties.
Barber plans to focus her sights on supporting veteran’s causes while hoping to tackle the issue of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder among military members causes in which she feels Presidential hopefuls Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump turn their focus too instead of unimportant topics.
As Us Weekly, reports Deshauna Barber is not only an Army Officer turned Beauty Queen, but she also has a Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia State University in Business Management. She later went on to Maryland University and obtained a Master’s Degree in Management Information Systems. She’s a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She loves to dance, hike and spend free time with family; she’s also passionate about breaking stereotypes within the military:
“I’m being able to say that no one pageant girl does the same thing or has the same background, and I’m also saying that no one soldier has the same background and does the same thing. We can be feminine, we can be in beauty contests, we can be models. So there’s stereotypes on both sides that I feel like I’m breaking by even being here and being able to compete for Miss USA.”
Barber will go on to compete for the title of Miss Universe 2016 later this year.
