Coming off of his first independent release, the self titled Jensen Kirk LP, Jensen Kirk was able to touch on the earlier parts of his life in and outside of music. He displays the thin line between battling the loss of his best friend due to street violence and trying to maintain his love for the art. In one of the most MC driven rap albums of last year, Jensen accomplished just that.
Landing himself on the radar of top streaming sites via Spotify, Tidal and also garnering over 50k streams on soundcloud alone, Jensen proved he belongs in the art of painting pictures musically. Gearing up the release of his new project, Jensen has entered in an entirely new realm of consciousness. In the words of the young artist himself:
“I’ve been aware of the fight but I am now more aware of self, I’am Kissed by the Sun.” In this telling new body of work, Jensen speaks on heavy issues in minority communities such as addiction, mental illness, self hatred and also self love. Under the jazzy but funky sounds of his producer Pico, this 10-track LP was able to paint a multitude of different colors, shedding new light on how people perceive Jensen’s home town of South Central, Los Angeles.
Kissed by the Sun is a conceptual project that was conceived through an interesting conversation about self hate and where it truly derives from amongst American minorities. In this brief but insightful conversation Jensen learned that it was the greeks who gave Ethiopia it’s name (Burnt Face.) It was the natives who interpreted this greek language to have meant (Sun Kissed.) Jensen was then able to relate this information to not only himself but to all people that fall under the circumstance of unequal treatment. “Communities that are pit against each other solely for the political gain of division will always become the revolutionist.”
