Rapper Freddie Gibbs was arrested in Toulouse, France on Thursday night in a suspected connection with an alleged rape incident that took place in Austria last year.
The arrest came before Gibbs was set to perform at Le Rex with a European arrest warrant being issued by Austrian authorities. According to the French publication La Depeche du Midi, the rapper was then taken to a nearby police station. He now possibly faces being extradited to Austria for further investigation. Vienna Online reported that Nina Bussek, spokeswoman for the Vienna prosecutor’s office confirmed the intent to extradite Gibbs, ‘We have requested his transfer.’
According to Rolling Stone, Gibbs’ legal team gave the following statement:
‘Freddie Gibbs adamantly denies the allegations that have been levied against by Austrian authorities. It makes you wonder why it took almost a year for Austrian officials to bring these charges. Freddie will be fighting the extradition request as these are nothing more than trumped up charges.’
The rapper was due to perform at Primavera Sound, a festival in Barcelona on Friday, but the rapper was forced to cancel his set which the festival announced on its Twitter page.
