It might sound crazy but if you were to fuse Travis Scott with Bryson Tiller, you somehow get Columbus, Ohio singer/emcee Elliott Trent, who recently dropped his latest EP, NUMB (June 9th).
Coming in at six songs in length and produced, for the most part by 808-H — who has been heating up in the city, himself — NUMB is a dark and shadowy foray into the world of money, drugs and the women who can sometimes be the cause of your downfall, once the sex, jealousy and lies get involved.
With songs on NUMB, like “Drugs After Dark” and “See You Dance” — which features Major Zoe, who is the lone guest appearance on this project — the overall vibe of the project is one that is of the trippy, late night vibes variety. Elliott keeps his judgment levels low, disregarding any inhibitions, but somehow keeping himself from being naive, as the closing joint, “Jealousy & Lies” suggests.
The versatility that is shown on this project is crazy. One minute, there will be autotune-heavy crooning, the next, rapping and even some falsetto thrown in. Trap Soul is a new genre that is rapidly emerging and NUMB is one of the better projects that you’ll hear this week, so press play and enjoy.
