And by “Rolling Loud” they actually mean rolling loud if you catch my drift…
This past Friday and Saturday – May 6-7 – I got the chance to travel up to Miami, FL with my friend to see the top dogs in the game from Future to Young Thug, Ty Dolla $ign, 2Chainz and all the way down to Lil Yachty. Being there I not only saw the known musicians but also the up and coming creatives. I was able to bear witness to fresh talent that are doing it big out here in such a competitive field and as you can tell by the poster for the 2016 lineup the artists that are said to hit the stage are pretty lit if you ask me. Let me take you on this journey as to what went down during this sold out event. Welcome to the road to Rolling Loud.
Being that this was my first time going to a festival, day 1 was like transitioning from middle school to high school for me. You’re nervous but the excited kind of nervous. In the midst of transitioning you’re starting to find yourself and who you’re. You start from shy and reserved but as soon as you take that first step onto the new campus – in this case, venue – your mind gets distracted by the loud music and its soothe-like feeling that eases your nerves. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I remember being in the crowd while Young Thug was onstage closing the evening out, dropping track after track and all of a sudden there was a mosh pit. My friend and I almost got trampled; good thing we both survived though. But, the overall vibes and aura that day were very positive and uplifting; family like. A family away from my own.

It’s not over though!! Day 2 was even more wild than the first. So my friend and I wake up dog tired and out of it as if a truck ran over us. My voice is horse and grimy but I knew I definitely didn’t want to miss Day 2; Future is performing. But in the meantime we grab breakfast and head over to the event at around 3:10 to catch the infamous Tity Boy aka 2Chainz performing some of his old plus new hits. It’s hot – about 88 degrees – and it’s already packed. Should’ve known. I don’t think there is one rap festival or festival in general that isn’t packed (remember, it’s my first time attending one). Nonetheless my friend and I cope with it and the day passes by.
As the day progresses and the amazing food is consumed with the downing of some water we stepped foot into a building that had another stage in it. It’s dark, the lights were beaming, the crowd was cheering, people were rolling up that loud pack and some were even sleeping on the couches just passed out. Don’t know if it was from the ganja, the heat or over excitement. All I know is that I wanted to see Future.

Prior to attending the most lit performance of a lifetime I had to use the bathroom and as soon as I walk in there’s an older black man with braids, a card table made out of cardboard and the obvious playing cards. Surrounding him are a flock of men who are partaking in this festivity, gambling. Not only is that going on but there’s vomit in almost all the sinks and toilets, graffiti on the walls and piss and tissue on the toilet seat and floor. These things are minor compared to the bigger picture which was to enjoy myself and my favorite artists perform.

Now the time has come for the man of the night to deliver a stunning performance and that’s what he did. Though Future was suppose to hit the stage by 11:30 and end at 12:30 he instead came on BPT (Black People Time) which was between 12:25 and 12:30 but the idea of time is no here nor there; Future was performing and that was all that mattered to me. Whether it was 12:40 or 1:00 he’s coming. Guess what? He came. He performed singles such as ‘Stick Talk’ and ‘Thought It Was A Drought’ from DS2, ‘Xanny Family’ from EVOL, ‘March Madness’ from 56 Nights, ‘Lay Up’ and ‘Real Sisters’ from Beast Mode and also dug up some oldies from previous albums/mixtape(s) that made the crowd even more in-tune with one another.

Being in that moment as Future ended this two day festival with a bang was a breathtaking experience; it was like a movie. Everybody in the crowd were rocking and vibing together from beginning all the way to the end. I don’t regret going one bit and would highly recommend those who haven’t gone to a festival or concert to go. I can’t wait for what Rolling Loud has in store for next year! See you then!
