The month of May is Lupus Awareness Month. A disease of flares, Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can potentially damage any part of the body including skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body. It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus; 1.5 million of those are American, with more than 16,000 new cases of lupus reported annually across the country.
On Friday May 13, a fashion show and gala billed as the 1st Annual Lupus: Life’s Untapped Potential in US Gala that was held in Silver Spring, MD’s Silver Spring Civic Building. A third-party fundraiser,the function was under the direction of the Lupus Foundation of America DC/MC/VA Chapter and featured special guest designer Koro Momlu of Project Runway fame as well as Nandi Chin and Corjor International.
The event also featured a special performance by The Performing Arts Center for African Cultures that was led by Kwame Ansah-Brew. The fundraiser had appearances from Kamanta Villaman, a Lupus Advocate, Dr. Donald Thomas, Jr., MD, a board certified rheumatologist and author of The Lupus Encyclopedia, and Taneice Chavers, founder of Shear Bliss Hair Lounge and Spa, a hair salon which provides specialized services for those coping with traumatic hair loss, Lupus advocates and overcomers Kelly D, Natica Apau, Greg Lewin, Sara Gorman, Shanelle Gabriel were all in attendance to give words and to discuss their journeys.
Lupus strikes mostly women of childbearing between the ages of 15-44. (15-44). Men, children, and teenagers, however can also develop lupus Most people with lupus develop the disease between the ages of 15-44.
