Depending on who you ask, Hip-Hop isn’t in the place that it once was. There was a time where you had to really be able to get down, lyrically, in order to gain the respect of your peers. You had to bring your A-Game or run the risk of becoming the laughingstock of an entire genre. However, that has all changed. As long as you have decent production, a catchy hook and maybe one or two witty punchlines, you’re good to go. We even witnessed Drake completely obliterate the notion that it’s wack to have a ghostwriter. I mean, it is, but overall, listeners don’t seem to care anymore. Nowadays people want to hear good music and be entertained, even if that entertainment comes from pure gimmicks. This doesn’t sit well with everyone, including Bronx emcee Breeze Embalm.
“There was a time when I was very frustrated with the state of Hip-Hop and all of its stereotypes”, Breeze explains, as he drops off his latest video for “Cochise”, named after the classic Audioslave record. “Cochise is about taking that anger and frustration and confronting it head on.”
Directed by Breeze himself, “Cochise” is a rather disorderly visual that sees the rapper going through various motions and likely intoxicated, as numerous empty bottles of beer litter the floor of a bare living space. He frantically moves about the space, spitting bar after bar over the Rock-heavy beat, which gets and keeps your attention as soon as it drops. Although this is a re-work of an Audioslave song, the Rage Against the Machine vibes are heavy as well.
Watch “Cochise”, below and make sure you pick up Breeze Embalm’s latest project, Embalming Fluid.
