
On May 13th, Chance the Rapper released his hip-hop-gospel album, Coloring Book exclusively to Apple Music and the Billboard numbers are in! Coloring Book reached a historic milestone as it becomes the first album to chart on the Billboard 200 strictly from streaming.
According to the Billboard charts, Chance’s independently release debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with 38,000 units. Nearly all those “units” were generated from streams of the tracks on Apple Music and totaling to 57.3 million streams. Billboard reports that each album unit is equivalent to 1,500 streams of an album.
While the all the attention is centered around Chance the Rapper, let us not forget about the 6 God, Drake. The Billboard 200 also noted that Drake’s VIEWS continues to hold onto the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weeks. Meghan Trainor’s sophomore album Thank You made its premiere on the chart at No. 3.
Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, which also features Chance, is another stream driven album and it is on its seventh week on the Billboard 200 chart with 99.93 percent of it’s album units coming from streams.
