Hip-hop legend, Slick Rick The Ruler has finally been granted U.S. citizenship after a legal battle that spanned over two decades. The England-born rapper who’s real name is Ricky Walters, known for the classics “Children Story,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Lodi Dodi” was sworn in as an American citizen Friday April 15th in New York, alongside other new U.S. citizens.
“I am so proud of this moment and so honored to finally become an American citizen. This has been a long time coming for me, and I am relieved to finally put this long chapter behind me. I want to thank everyone my family, friends and fans who have supported me and stuck by me over these 23 years. I am truly blessed and stay tuned, I will have more to announce soon.” said the “Hey Young World” rapper.
In July of 1990, Walters was arrested for shooting his cousin, Mark Plummer in the foot. Plummer serviced as a bodyguard for Walters until he was fired for allegedly attempting to extort Walters. That resulted in Plummer threatening Walters and his family. After seeing Plummer near his home, the rapper opened fire on his cousin. In 1991 Walters pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and eight weapons charges from the incident.
“Rick was lucky to have champions and receive a pardon,” his rep tells Rolling Stone. “He has since lived a peaceful life. Today is about looking forward, not back.”
