While not coming straight out of hip-hop’s birthplace, both Jo Marte & Booda Beats exude a sound that exemplifies growing up close enough to the musical Mecca that is NYC. Hailing from Utica, New York–just hours away from the bustling of the city–this duo joined east coast forces on their new mixtape Not Afraid to get Paid 2. Their latest project is a notable effort in duality, with both emcees (Marte) and producer (Beats) headlining as equitable artists.
The trance-hop instrumentals assist in familiarizing fans with Booda Beats’ signature sound as Marte’s flow fills in the blanks. “Not My Girl” sufficiently serves those missing the House of Balloons era from The Weeknd, but topped off with bars “The Money” is a dope change of pace, featuring a clip of emcee-turned-internet-agitator 50 Cent, warning people about bums in their circle and a quicker beats and cadences from Jo and Booda. Through out the whole tape, listeners get to hear artists, who are admittedly “for the people,”confident enough in their sound to experiment with various sounds and styles but green enough to feel authentic in their navigation of their artistry.
