Fashion went from original and authentic to copied, fabricated and reworked in order to make a quick buck.
The fashion industry nowadays has been given such a bad image due to its lack of POC representation and cultural appropriation. Instead of embracing all shapes and sizes in models they tend to shun and/or discredit them. Mainstream fashion plus trends tend to be given more attention than the underground designers who I see are working their butts off for their brand and their image. This week I have for you two incredible designers, Teanna and Rhude whose work deserves a lot more attention then your average joe!

Meet Teanna, a designer from San Diego, CA whose vision seems to be all set and her future seems brighter than ever. I came across this vibrant woman as I was scrolling down my Twitter timeline so I decided to check her out. Off the bat I see that she’s a designer, a person who dabbles in the arts. I check out her work and her pieces are stunning! I’ve never came across such innovation, such new and chic looks that look cute and comfy.
“It all started a few years ago I was making stuff but just for me. I would always get compliments and people asking me to make them things. I never took it too serious.” – Teanna
I do agree that not everybody has talent (though some are more evident than others). This sort of craft (designing) is not easy. Not only do you have to have a sense of what looks right but also the ability to create and produce a well thought out piece.
“I knew I always wanted my own clothing line but I didn’t know where to start. So I did my research and learned more about what steps I needed to put my dreams in action and here I am now.” – Teanna
Through research, persistence and dedication your dreams/aspirations will come true. Not only is Teanna talented, gifted, a POC and a woman, this next designer Rhude, real name Ruigi (roo-we-G) from Los Angeles, CA brings a new approach to the fashion world. According to the intent and goal of his brand posted on his official website Ruigi plans to, “[celebrate] the youth and elegance through simple and functional clothes.”
I’ve been following Ruigi for awhile now on social media websites and his designs are so simple. Coming across something so simple yet presented with care is in a way soothing to me; to find that one person who isn’t over-the-top or too “out there” but likes things plain jane and I like that. Being comfortable — in the context of fashion — is important because it allows for the individual to take their talents and morph it into their own lane. With Ruigi his designs to some people may be “overpriced” or “too bland” but it’s all about what that person puts into his/her work which doubles its value.
Check out some of Ruigi’s collections here and Teanna’s here! Remember, a brand cannot flourish without its foundation’s (fans/audience) love and support.
