How we really feel about the ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ trailer that dropped early this morning needs to be addressed. Keeping in mind that Star Wars (in my very personal and adamant opinion) is not just the greatest franchise in film history, but has gone as far to shape modern day pop culture. However, does R1 have the legs to stand alone (well an anothlogy but stand alone as in sub-story, you get it) among some of the best works in movie history? Admittedly the trailer looks relatively great, but slap that coveted ‘Star Wars’ moniker on anything and the majority of people (myself included) will flock. ‘Rogue One’ takes place just prior to ‘A New Hope’ and follows Jyn Erso, (played by Felicity Jones) a prophectic rebel soldier who is tasked in leading a rebel alliance to search for intel relative to ultimately destroying the Death Star. Directed by Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla) and also starring Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen, and more, ‘Rogue One’ seems to act as the prelude to all preludes, while maintaining an individual stay in the Star Wars universe. The trailer also has massive appeal in terms of the avid fans and conspiracy theorists alike raising valuable questions like is there a Grand Moff Tarkin appearance? Is Jyn Rey’s Mother? What roll with The Force play in a rebel-based storyline? And on and on and on. The fairly unknown (to the casual fan of the series) ‘Rogue One’ storyline has the rare opportunity to build upon the legendary series and a chance to capture a new generation of Star Wars fans with the introduction of classic characters, just in their younger years of course. Regardless, I’ll see it at least twice. Just wish December 16th wasn’t so far, far away.
