Coming up in his Grandma’s house in Central Texas, Chamothy (pronounced kam/uh/thee) grew up listening to some of the great R&B and Soul performers of the 50’s and 60, so he admittedly has an “old soul.” You can hear that old soul in his music, as Chamothy has a strong understanding and grasp of music theory, having played music throughout out his time in school. Cham and members of his crew started making beats in high school and from there he slowly developed his style, writing and producing for host of local acts in Austin, Texas. “Over the past few years our music has really grown, it’s always just been about the beats since I started but I really love song -writing, music theory, but I just naturally transitioned into rap because the songs and sonics of soul music and R&B have their handprints all over Hip-Hop,” Chamothy explained.
“Growing up in Austin, Texas with such a rich musical history here, it’s hard not to be inspired every year with SXSW and all that it brings to the city,” Chamothy added. “My main goal of SXSW was just to push this ‘Only Ones’ single and establish this core fan base.” Now with a full fledged brand thats gaining steam, Chamothy had several shows lined up for SXSW as he follows up his the premiere of his latest song “Only Ones.” Fans of Chamothy should look out for signature chipmunk (see below) that’s already getting the local Hip-Hop community talking about his use of branding marketing. “Within the last year and a half, Austin’s Hip-Hop scene has taken off. A lot of people around me are making positive moves and I think we have gotten a lot of attention with the chipmunk and our marketing concepts,” Chamothy added.
“I never wanted people to see what I look like and the chipmunk kind of took over because I was just focused on the music. Indie rock bands always use branding but don’t always use pics of the band. People have known about my music and the chipmunk more than they know about me at times. I think it represents me well and its drawn attention to the brand. We have t-shirts out that have the gold teeth on him and a lot of other merchandise that people are really picking up on, so its good to see the movement gaining momentum.”
Check out the video above and let us know if you vibe with “Only Ones.”
