The 2016 NBA Playoffs have started and once again the New York Knicks will not be competing for a title. It was a season full of promise, but yet due to the inexperience of many players and mid-season management changes, the New York Knicks fell short of the 8th seed. Not all is lost because the New York Knicks have a bright future (Porzingis) and plenty of loyal fans.
Community organization/lifestyle brand BlackMarketWares displayed their Knick loyalty on April 25th by presenting a two-piece capsule collection inspired by Knicks legends Carmelo Anthony and Larry Johnson. This collection also celebrates the 5th year anniversary of the brand. Only long-time New York Knicks fans understand how this is truly New York Knicks inspired. The Larry Johnson tee displays the no. 2 and Johnson’s signature two-arm gesture. The Carmelo long-sleeve tee has the BlackMarketWares company logo on the front, and the phrase “Original 7” on the back. If you are aware of Carmelo’s community activism and his faith, then you’ll recognize this as a powerful tribute.
Anthony and Johnson were chosen because of their cultural influence and involvement in the community. Johnson is currently the Business and Basketball Operations Representative for the New York Knicks. He works closely with the Community Relations department. He is also often seen at important community events such as the Young Men’s Empowerment Day in Brooklyn which was on February 27th. Anthony is very involved in the community as well. He was seen protesting the murder of Freddie Gray in Baltimore. He mentored several youth inmates at Rikers Island. He also does amazing work through the Carmelo Anthony Foundation.
The BlackMarketWares team is inspired by athletes who take the initiative to help others less fortunate than themselves. Anthony and Johnson promote positivity in low-income communities. They show that it’s not enough to just make it out of the “hood.” You have to go back and assist others who are dealing with those same harsh circumstances.
“No one man can rise above the conditions of the masses of his people.” – Larry Johnson
