Happy Birthday Pharrell! Today we wish one of the greatest music icons of our generation another year of life.
Pharrell Williams turns 43 years YOUNG today. It’s hard to believe especially since Skateboard P wears his age really, really well! Before mentioning his monumental career achievements, here’s a quick bio on how he got his start.
His first musical breakthrough arrived when Teddy Riley requested his songwriting skills to pen a verse for Wreckx-n-Effect’s ’92 hit, “Rump Shaker.” Williams’ love of music began in his high school years at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia where he would later meet longtime friend and fellow music partner Chad Hugo. Williams and Hugo would go on in their careers to create the producer duo The Neptunes. Together, they have produced hits for every genre from rap, R&B, rock, pop and funk—sometimes combining multiple genres to create one sound.
Although he got his start in high school, Pharrell knew music was with him as a child. Taken from a Cosmogirl interview, Williams explained as a kid he and his aunt spent time together in front of the stereo playing records.
Here are some of Pharrell’s greatest accomplishments spawning his entire career:
- In 2002, Pharrell and Chad founded their label, Star Trak Entertainment, producing one of the label’s top acts in its early years, The Clipse.
- In 2005, he founded Billionaire Boys Club, a streetwear brand that also focused on men’s accessories.
- Later that year, Williams collaborated with Nigo, the founder of BAPE, to create his second fashion line Ice Cream.
- Interscope and Star Trak Entertainment released his first solo debut “In My Mind” in 2006.
- His 2014 second effort “Girl” spawned many hits including “Happy” and “Come Get It Bae.”
- “Happy” became an international hit from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack in June 2013.
- From 2014 until now, he has been a coach on NBC’s hit television competition “The Voice.”
