Tidal may have been boosted by the release of Beyonce’s LEMONADE this week, but Apple Music CEO, Tim Cook has announced that the streaming service has successfully hit 13 million subscribers. Since February, the platform has picked up approximately two million users.
The service, launched in June 2015 has set itself apart from its competitors providing music fans with uniquely curated radio stations such as Beats 1 and its connect feature which allows artists to share media. Apple Music has had some huge music heavyweights in its corner, such as Drake who recently announced his highly awaited album, View From The 6 will premiere on his Beats 1 show, OVOSOUND Radio. Taylor Swift has also become an Apple Music advocate featuring in an advert promoting the service running on a treadmill listening to Drake and Future’s “Jumpman.” DJ’s such as BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden have also thrown their weight behind Apple’s service.
Apple Music currently sits behind Swedish music service Spotify, which is ahead in subscribers. Last month, CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek tweeted that the platform now had 30 million users. Tidal also made big moves this week, exclusively releasing Beyonce’s LEMONADE album. Owner, Jay Z has some of the significant names and potential behind Tidal with the caliber of talent he has signed to Roc Nation. Just in February, Kanye West limited his highly anticipated album, The Life of Pablo solely to Tidal. Jay’s Tidal announced that it had three million users using the service last month according to Billboard.
The effects of Beyonce’s LEMONADE for the service are too early to tell for Tidal, but the battle of streaming services continues. The potential for Apple Music to expand is staggering considering the fact that it is yet reach its one year anniversary and is growing rapidly.
