Get familiar with Domo Mayo, an artist out of South Carolina who traded in his hoop dreams for fantasies of platinum plaques once he moved to the birthplace of hip-hop: New York City. Grinding from Brooklyn since 2009, the lyricist shows musical influences by differentiating facets of hip-hop like the trap-rap, drill beats, and the more satisfyingly simple rhyme schemes of his contemporaries, such as Future and Travis Scott.
The plight of a hip-hop connoisseur . They want lyrics that mean something, they want flow and substance but they also love themselves some trap beats. Turning all the way up on the occasionally blurry line between storytelling music and the gangsta ish that can lit-ify any setting is an art only the older school emcee can execute, right? Not anymore.
Domo’s latest track, “Hit a Lick” will draw inevitable comparisons to recent G.O.O.D. music signee Desiigner, specifically the monumental record “Panda”, which became a thing of internet chatter upon receiving over two-million hits within a month. While the Supa Sam produced song shares similarities in trending sounds, Domo has his track record of sincerity and hustle as his foundation rather than the ideal of overnight success. For sure, “Hit a Lick” can serve as car or club banger but it’s when Mayo uses the sweet sounds of the turn up to spit authentic about his up-bringing and struggle, that really lays the groundwork for his fanbase.
