With a week to go ‘til the release of their collaborative concept album, Planet Asia and DJ Concept deliver the final single off Seventy Nine in the form of the soulful, sample-flipping “International.”
Anyone who peeped the record’s lead single—the straight-up slapper “Gold Vases”—knows that this rapper-producer duo can do some damage musically. And they’re driving that point home here with some help from Brownsville crooner (and rapper) Marvelous Mag. His catchy hook, which centers on the idea of continuing to hustle until you’re no longer breathing, is a smooth and thoughtful complement to Planet Asia’s rhymes.
For the majority of the track, the Fresno, Calif.-hailing rapper keeps it introspective, as he looks back on his younger days and the cats he used to run with. It’s a time, as he acknowledges, that left his nana worried about his future, though he’s clearly made it out just fine in the end. He’s definitely aware of that fact, tipping his hat to his ability to push a different kind of weight (physical and digital units) and move the crowd.
It all makes for a fitting final lead-up single for Planet Asia and DJ Concept, who dial back on the harder elements of previous leaks (peep the Sean Price-featured “The Festival” if you haven’t yet) with something relaxed and reflective. Their new album, Seventy Nine, drops March 25 via Coalmine Records, and it will be available through iTunes (where it’s now available for pre-order) and all major digital retailers. If you prefer something tangible, it can also be copped onCD or limited gold vinyl (also now available for pre-order).
