Sure, we may have the Justins (Timberlake and Bieber) but let’s be honest: we haven’t had a strictly R&B white-boy since the likes of Jon B. Well, Darrein Safron is here to satiate that void in your musical catalog.
This past October, rap legend Tech N9ne revealed Safron, the new signee off his label Strange Music and on March 11th, his much-anticipated project, The Brilliant EP, dropped along with a dope video accompanying “Bad Gurl.” The cool blue-hued visual serves as an interesting juxtaposition to a steamy track about delving into some questionable behaviors when your man is acting up. The ode to your #CreepSquad goals, with production by Jeffery “Frizz” James, is satisfyingly reminiscent of early 2000’s R&B on some Usher and Neyo ish, while the St. Louis native’s vocals are something all together new.
What’s next for the young crooner? His subsequent radio single is the instant banger “That Me”, featuring a verse by Steven Stevens and spotlighting Safron’s sick range, echoing MJ heights. That’s not hyperbole either, the kid can sing. In what’s another sexually boastful song, Saffron is able to demonstrate amazing control of his vocals and the melody will be sure to be stuck in your head (in that good way). Whichever track you choose to check out first, you’ll be left wanting to hear more from this new artist.
