So while your favorite rapper was at KODs making it rain everyone’s rent money, our dearest Kendrick Lamar decided to release a surprise album a few weeks ago. Comprised of unreleased tracks filled with pure politics and assertion, K Dot took to the No.1 spot on Billboards 200 Chart. Well, what do you know – it seems as if the truth supersedes Instagram models and gold chains after all because Lamars’ relentless release, Untitled Unmastered taking No.1 is just the icing on the cake.
Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Kendrick was recently nominated at this years 58th Annual Grammy Awards for 11 different categories. Out of the 5 Grammys he scored, his sophomore album To Pimp a Butterfly won “Best Rap Album,” and with the unadvertised release of Untitled Unmastered it’s clear to see why. Kendrick clearly isn’t ever afraid to handle the elephant in the room, which is one reason why the Compton artist has become so successful. His lyrical precision never fails to shy away from the obvious on the table. From racial stereotypes to the vicious side effects and obstacles of the music industry, King Kendrick touches it all.
If you’re a fan of Lamar, you may have already noticed the transition of lyrical substance he’s made from Good Kid, M.A.D.D City, to To Pimp A Butterfly and now Untitled Unmastered. The rapper has gone from above industry standard to controversial genius with this third album, delivering nothing short of Hip-Hop domination.
With a strong fan base backing him, Kendrick continues to compose bars based on issues of the world and stories of his upbringing that keep us on our toes. That being said, its obvious that the consistency of what is authentic and relevant, is getting the rapper further than your favorite trap artist (and with 11 Grammy nominations, we can safely assume that the critics agree as well.) If you haven’t heard the brilliance behind the number 1 album, Untitled Unmastered check it out – you won’t regret it.
