The MTV Woodies are back at it again.
And A$AP Rocky’s the host.
Very, very exciting.
For those who have never seen this particular award show, The Woodies look to discover emerging musicians, honoring winners with a chunk of wood that has a large nail pierced down the middle and a hammer attached to the front of it.
But instead of the traditional award ceremony this year, MTV decided to switch things up a little bit.
Change is always good, right?
The hour long broadcast of “MTV Woodies / 10 for 16” will focus on highlighting 10 new artists they believe are poised to rise in 2016.
The Woodies will broadcast live from the South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, March 16, with performances from Travi$ Scott, Chvrches, The Chainsmokers, Jack Garratt, Kehlani, Jidenna, A$AP Ferg, and many more.
“This is all about shedding light on the music of this generation, the love and bond between different artists,” Rocky said in a recent interview. “We want to shed light at the Woodies on those who influence a lot of people and those who don’t get credit.”
Being on the Woodies stage is nothing new for Rocky though.
Back in 2014, Rocky and Skillrex took home the Best Collaboration Woodie in 2014 award for their song “Wild for the Night,” and Rocky also performed at the show.
From being one of the most prominent rap artists to emerge, countlessly being listed as one of the most stylish men alive, showing off his acting skills on “Dope,” impersonating Tyler, the Creator…answer me this, what can’t Pretty Flacko do?
“Acting is a little bit more nerve-racking, because with hosting you can be your own personality. That’s my comfort zone being a music personality,” he said. “We are talking about music. This is what I do.”
Executive vice president of music and multi-platform strategy Erik Flannigan hopes the awards have more significance when they see Rocky, who was once in these artists’ shoes, returning as a host.
“We want to introduce new artists to our audience,” Flannigan told Billboard in a recent interview. “With A$AP, it shows the power of the Woodies. To have him come back as a host shows the trajectory of his career and the show’s involvement.”
“MTV Woodies / 10 for 16” will air live on March 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
