The ability to blend sounds, old and new, and churn out delicious ear candy is precisely what African native, Stylezz executes flawlessly. Some of the livest contemporary music resonates because of influences from other great works palpable within. Tons of classics contain samples of other classics, flooding listeners with dope quotables and good vibes brought to you by favorites who took you there during another time. Ingenious and most imperative, however, is what a new artist does with the inspiration from their musical mentors. His eclectic sound can be attributed to a collocation of circumstances.
Born Ope Kayode in the Nigerian state of Lagos and currently living in the big apple, Stylezz carries with him the juxtaposition of afro-beat and world music waves with the soulful yearnings of gospel/choir sounds found here in the states. His broad-based sounds, with influences ranging from the incomparable Fela Kuti to Bob Marley to James Brown and MJ has gained praise and accolades including the Nigerian Entertainment Award for Dispora Artist of the Year.
The young but seasoned performer presents his unique stylings in a way which show listeners the impressive pedigree of a performer molded by greats, yet still, clearly a product of himself. Thanks to Ri-Ri’s latest patois heavy smash “Work”, there’s been a fascination with all things of possible island origin, not seen since the likes of Sean Paul’s “Gimme the Light” and a conduit for Stylezz to gain a larger following. Considering this, it’s the perfect climate for the reggae artist to capitalize with the track “Baddest Whine.” The simple song features the complimentary paring of some muted steel drums and Stylezz’ passively smooth vocals. Not to disappoint, the accompanying video is sure in including eye candy for the viewers that check it out on Youtube rather than Soundcloud.
