Since the internet misses our good friend Frank so much, here are 10 songs that you may have passed over from the man himself before his highly acclaimed and potentially only ever official album.
In 2012, Frank Ocean was known as one of the most promising artists of our time. He was seen as a man who was capable of making timeless music that transcended both genre and generational gaps. He was someone with a voice so silky smooth that you actually felt like you were relaxing on a beach while listening to his music. His lyrics were so vivid that you felt love or despair or agony for whoever he was singing about on his songs. Frank was supposed to be the next one. And honesty, he still was. He still is.
But in 2016 it seems like the internet has turned Frank into nothing but a meme, something to laugh about and make jokes about. I’m not hating on meme-culture because I think the internet wins at life most of the time. I just think that it is weird how we gave Rihanna and Adele both almost 4 year passes between their albums but with Frank we cannot sit still. I think it is because of the quality of the relationship that he has built with his audience. They need more of his music because they need more of him. He does not have social media, simply a tumblr page that is infrequently used to drop inspirational quotes, poems and the occasional misleading post about his upcoming album.
Channel Orange was phenomenal, but there are many Frank gems that have gone unnoticed for the past few years. So if you are looking for your fix of Frank, here are 10 of the most underrated Frank Ocean songs that were released before his debut and potentially only album ever. Enjoy!
10. “Got The Keys”
This is one of the more upbeat and fun songs that Frank has recorded. It is from a compilation/ mixtape that he released before Channel Orange. All of the songs from what he calls The Lonny Breaux Collection were recorded before he became Frank Ocean, but they are all still so good. It seems like he is really trying to find his sound, but listening to the 64 songs on this collection is like a musical journey through his creative process.
9. “Greedy Love”
This is one of my all-time favorite Frank songs. He speaks about the thought process of someone dealing with their jealousy and coming to terms with their potentially irrational need to always have their partners attention.
8. “Rocket Love”
Great tune where he sings about love taking him higher, alluding to the way that love is sometimes similar to the way that a rocket ship takes someone to new heights.
7. ” We All Try”
This is a classic. It’s off of his Nostalgia mixtape but often gets glossed over due to the popularity of songs like “Strawberry Swing” and “Novacane.” On this one, he talks about his few beliefs in this world and the struggle to find our place in a world with so many complications.
6. “The City”
This is a more somber effort from Frank where he compares his heart to a city and he gave it away to someone who may have abused their power. Now he cannot seem to function properly. This is a side of Frank that I really enjoy. He shows his more somber side on songs like “Bad Religion” and “Forrest Gump” as well.
5. “Together”
4. “Blue Whale”

3. “Truce”
I thought this song was a great play on throwing up the peace sign and wanting to end the war between you and your partner in a relationship that was not working out as you had thought it would. It is definitely more poppy than anything else he has released recently but I think that it is still a really cool feel.
2. “White”
This is a beautiful ballad over a piano and minimal instrumentation.
- “Richest Man In The Room”
This might be my all-time favorite Frank Ocean song. It is just such a beautiful outlook on life and love and what is actually valuable in a materialistic world ran by the thought of money.
Still worth a listen: “There Will Be Tears,” “She Won’t Say Hello,” “Time Machine,” and “So Comfortable.”
