Meet 18-year-old Brooklyn based rapper, Desiigner, G.O.O.D Music’s recent signee and hip-hop’s newest sensation.
Desiigner’s single titled “Panda” is currently tearing up the airwaves and it’s quickly on it’s way to be known across the nation. Now upon first lending a ear to this track everyone will notice the same thing: this guy sounds EERILY similar to Future. Fans of the self proclaimed Atlanta rapper, Future Hendrix, would give this track one listen and say “this guy is trying to take Future’s style” and would remember a time in hip-hop where sounding this similar to another artist was basically career suicide.
But you could take that kind of bitter fan approach to this situation or you can take the high road.
Desiigner is only 18 years old and most likely grew up listening to rappers from the south like Future, Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy, you would realize it could be just a innocent influence on his music. Similar to NY rappers such as A$AP Rocky who has Houston influences or Bobby Shmurda who has a more Chicago drill sound, Desiigner doesn’t have a traditional New York sound.
So have we reached a point in hip-hop where we all have to just accept the fact that some young rappers are influenced by hard hitting bass trap jams? Or are we still going to expect artists to rep solely where they come from?
