With the conversation sparked, eyes were on the NAACP Image Awards last Friday night and, thankfully, it didn’t disappoint.
Anthony Anderson delivered with a N.W.A. — themed opener that featured lines like: “the movie’s called Creed not Rocky,” (throwing dabs at Sylvester Stallone’s Golden Globe speech where he forgot to thank both the director and leading actor in Creed (who happen to be Black), and other verses such as: “We ain’t no bozos no more clowning we got all our own showzos.” Okay, so some verses were better than others but the effort was truly appreciated (and one that’s actually worth watching).
Some of the night’s biggest winners included Michael B. Jordan for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture and Entertainer of the Year. Straight Outta Compton took home the award for Outstanding Motion Picture with Empire and Black-ish taking home the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series awards, respectively.
