Dash Machete attempts to play ‘Nice’ with new single. With “I’ma be nice/I’ma I’ma be nice tho” perpetually cycling though my head for the past 24 hours, Ms. Machete’s ‘Nice’ is far more than a catchy jingle. As her introductory foray into the world of digital releases, (peep her Soundcloud) and aside from her impressive Instagram following currently sitting at just under 8,500, ‘Nice’s’ sonic dichotomy transitions from a menacingly darker synth to a euro-pop, crossover Hip-Hop record draped in funk; Ostensibly tailor made for both radio and the club alike. Interestingly enough, the 18-year old Brooklyn songstress switches to a British sounding delivery half way through the record, and the crazy part is, it really works. Dash’s whimsical way of playing with sound and melody creatively takes form as a play on culture and accent turns captivating. And while ‘Nice’ has a fun and upbeat nature, her writing and wordplay prowess takes the shine, showcasing an inherent knack for creativity and structure. In what hopes to be the first release of many, ‘Nice’ seems to exist in a space all it’s own; A musical purgatory that allows her the luxury of being uncategorized and uninhabited by ubiquitous comparison and the opportunity to grow and evolve at her own pace. I suppose I could make a play on words talking about how nice the record is, but that wouldn’t quite sum it up.
