ABC’s sitcom, Black-ish, has never been petrified to speak about real life experiences. They have been even bolder about the topics they discuss on Season 2.
Let me give you a quick rundown of what some of the episodes consisted of.
The show tackled the “n-word” after Jack Johnson, one of the six-year-old twins, performed the uncensored version of Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” at his school’s talent show.
There is even the “Rock, Papers, Scissors, Gun” episode where patriarch, Dre Johnson decides they need a gun in the house after a neighborhood break-in.
Now, the black family that we grew to love will address the police brutality issue on their Feb. 24 episode.
Wednesday night’s episode, airing at 9:30/8:30c will be a tear-jerker as each member of the Johnson family has a different reaction to the fictional incident involving an assault towards a black teen broadcasted on the news.
Bow, the matriarch of the family, wants to protect the children from the gruesome reality of life. While Dre’s theory is, the earlier they know the better.
“We decided to just see what happens when you turn on that television, and you have that conversation that you’re not ready to have, and there’s a lot of different opinions in the room and no one’s quite sure of how to talk to the kids. We just went from there,” Kenya Barris, creator and executive producer of Black-ish told Variety.
It will be a hot subject, but hopefully this episode will break both the struggle and silence some African-American families have when it comes to speaking to their children about race issues, brutality, and protests.
And may I add? Black-ish is clearly not playing games this season. Make sure to catch the new episode tomorrow night!
And heere are a few other shows, throughout the years, that were also not afraid to scream, “BLACK LIVES MATTER.”
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air – “Cased Up”
Everybody Hates Chris – “Racial Profiling”
Law & Order: SVU – “Community Policing”
