With his second studio album, In My Mind, out now, it’s safe to say that Grammy-nominated crooner, BJ the Chicago Kid is ready to present himself to the world. Hailing from the Southside of Chicago, the Motown Records singer has released teaser trailers and has three singles from the album circulating the airwaves. With help from old friends such as Chance the Rapper on “Church” continuing to climb the charts and recently released track “The New Cupid” ft. Grammy Award-winning and Hip-Hop heavyweight, Kendrick Lamar, BJ the Chicago Kid has been busy. The “Man Down” singer caught up with RESPECT about his upcoming album, events and more.
Growing up in the church then taking us to church in a secular way, BJ spoke about his evolution saying “It was about me being honest. The reality of me looking at both sides and making the connection between the worlds.” Last month, the Chicago Kid released a tribute EP to D’Angelo celebrating 16 years of “How Does It Feel.” “I just wanted to pay tribute. He was one of my biggest inspirations and his music continues to touch us in positive ways,” he stated.
The second released song, “Man Down” lets us know that BJ is coming for what’s his, and singing about love (or lack thereof) on “The New Cupid,” it’s clear we can expect a more open BJ on In My Mind. Just getting off the Kritically Acclaimed tour with Big Krit, and gearing up for Broccoli Fest in April, the soulful sounds the singer continues to bring, allows us to have hope in Rhythm and Blues. “R&B isn’t as popular anymore but [we] are still here. Back when I was young watching [MJ] there wasn’t social media and people were excited to see him. I want to keep that alive.”
From independent artist to Motown mover and shaker, from Southside Chicago to LA living, BJ the Chicago Kid prides himself on being authentic and giving his true self. “[As far as the music goes] whatever mode I’m in, in life inspires that…they’ll try to put you in a box and I just want to give yall who I am,” he said. Whether paying homage to the inspirations that paved the way or giving a peak into his thoughts, BJ the Chicago Kid is here to stay. “Life itself keeps me going. I’ve been through too much. I’m consistently inspired by the past. My thoughts never stop; my training never stops.”- BJ the Chicago Kid
