You may know BJ the Chicago Kid’s voice from the ubiquitous SchoolBoy Q song “Studio,” but you’d be remiss if that’s where you stopped listening.
New York recently came out in a big way before ultimately giving him the green-light,to show support and experience an inmate performance at SOB’s on February 23rd, headlining HOT97’s infamous “Who’s Next?” concert series along with the electro-funk stylings of Jay Watts. The Chi-town native was well aware of rough reputation and hard-to-please ears of the city he was in, “The love that New York City is giving me right now is incredible, ‘cause I’m definitely not from here and growing up to know how New York taste is, is very particular so, to accepted? I love it, I love it.”
The singer’s kept a constant stream of soul and energy through out his intense performance, including crowd favorites such as his Chance The Rapper and Buddy collab “Church”; An apropos song for someone grew up in the choir and who was once a back-up singer for gospel duo Mary Mary. Going from background vocals to topping bills at solo shows means BJ has reason to celebrate but explains that he’s remaining focused. It’s only right seeing as though he’s just recently dropped his major label debut In My Mind, off Motown records, which is currently available on Tidal.
