Young Lucid is an urban artist, producer, and songwriter from New York City who blends no nonsense lyrics with keen wordplay and melodic hooks into his own diverse style. At just 18-years old, the Staten Island emcee was the youngest artist singed to Dock Street Records, the sister label that houses the legendary Method Man. The young phenom is now working independently with his creative agency DeadLife Entertainment.
Lucid has performed at many established venues such as the NYC Arts Cypher, Eve Ultra Lounge, Tobacco Road, Sullivan Hall, Santos’ Party House and many more. He has also opened for the likes of CJ Fly, Papoose, Method Man, Sheek Louch and member of Shady’s Slaughterhouse mega-group, Joell Ortiz, who was also featured on his first single “Runaway.” Coming off of his recent New York City Mini-Tour, Lucid is scheduled to perform with Dreamville’s Bas, as well as a slot on SXSW next month.
The emerging emcee recently released his debut EP, “Lucid Dreams” back in December and now returns with a visual off the project. “The man is sort of seen as the God,” said filmmakerAlexandra Nyman, who directed the video. “Usually everything is his controllable environment, the women will come dance around him at the drop of a hat, it’s just very scummy and it doesn’t reflect reality.”
The video still has the standard guy-flanked-by-ladies scenario, however the main storyline is female empowerment and LGBTQ advocacy. Lucid pursues a woman in a club (Staten Island’sEve Ultra Lounge) but the woman isn’t interested in Lucid. She’s interested in Kristal — and the feelings are mutual. The interaction doesn’t end with an insult or a brawl, just appreciative acceptance.
Nyman said the positive message is twofold: “For one, it makes clear the object-of-affection isn’t objectified. Lucid accepts that she was never his to take. For another, it’s not as hetero-normative as most rap videos.” Featuring vocals from Elaine Kristal, an R&B artist and songwriter also from Staten Island, watch above the official video for “She Love It.”
