Hip-hop emcee Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, shared a message on Kanye West‘s website last night.
Bey has been detained from South Africa for the last week after being arrested for allegedly using fake travel documents. He was arrested in Cape Town last week while boarding on a flight to Ethiopia and was later released on bail of 5,000 rand ($300 USD).
Yasiin begins the audio message with ‘No More Parties in S.A.’ freestyle, spitting:
“I’ve committed no crime/Why is the state wasting my time?/They must be out of their minds.”
After his freestyle intro, he commenced into a speech (which is quite lengthy) describing his treatment by the South African government
“I am being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully, and without any reason,” he says. “I have reason to believe or suspect that there are political motivations behind the way I’m being treated.”
his innocence
“it is not a fictitious document.”
and even announces his retirement from music and acting
“I am retiring from the music recording industry as it is currently assembled today, and also from Hollywood, effective immediately. I’m releasing my final album this year, and that’s that.”
He will be tried in a South African court in March.
A lot, right? Good for Bey though, for using a platform to address any speculation the media has stirred up in addition to shouting out to Ye for being a “real friend.”
