A track like “Keep it a Buck” is the result of a very specific myriad of talents. First, there’s Fame School’s seemingly effortless churning out of epic beats. Then, of course, the colletive’s own Telli taking those epic beats and vocally transcending them into singularly ill moments. Finally, there’s the dope lyrical stylings of Slim Skyiew to bring this trifecta of a conscious banger home.
On “Keep It Buck,” Skyview explains his hustle as, “Trying to get it before they off me,” and sadly, this is the narrative for a lot of today’s youth. However, the emcee uses the Fame School-provided ear candy as his chance to weed out frauds in his circle and to make a call to action for his peers to get off the corners: “You made a million on the corner? Feel like the man n*gga don’t you? But you don’t see thats where they want you, just another reason cops be feening, they be on us.” The homage to Trayvon Martin and Mike Brown are is paid in the apropos hook, featuring the line, “I done seen hate fuck up everything…” For a refreshing moment of music with a message, check out the entire track below.
