East London rapper Ayar is no stranger to praise, as his collaborative effort “Authentape,” (with Rageouz) garnered buzz among several international outlets. However, this time around he’s ready to bask in the glory all on his own with the release of his debut mixtape, “Off the Corner.” During the sixteen- track tape, Ayar examines internal struggles, as well as romantic musings over ambient beats and reworked classics. (Aaliyah’s “One in a Million” and Miguel’s “Girl with the Tattoo” on “Eastern Sliding,” are clear standouts.) Ayar’s velvety tone compliments the often whimsical instrumentals that accompany each song, demonstrating that while he may have the pipes of an R&B singer, he has the soul of an emcee.
