Finally, after heading to the studio with the likes of Plain Pat and Emile Haynie, we get to hear some new Kid Cudi. Though he is “Confused” on this first track, the musical direction that he’s going in with Speedin Bullet to Heaven -set to release later this year– is clear. Cudi has never been afraid to deviate from the traditional hip-hop sonics and that notion is exemplified here; this sounds like it could’ve been featured on an album from a 90’s grunge band.
“I hate the drugs but I love the numb / I hate the gun but I want the son. Confused.”, Cudi sings.
The fact that he experiments with sounds and makes the music that he wants to make is a good thing, though, because it’s refreshing to hear Cudder croon over classic guitar licks and drum hits. Stream the single below.
