On the 17th anniversary of the angelic Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody”, the Harlem-bred producer APSPDR+, which is a stylized version of “AP Super Producer”, shared his incredible remix of the timeless Detroit-native’s record with us. Today, the outstanding composer exclusively premieres a remix of his fellow Harlemite’s record titled, “Chasing Time“. It’s in its original form, “Chasing Time” is a light and fun dance record that deals with the sensitive idea of wasting value time with a significant other. Before you get into his rendition, by way of a short interview, you’ll learn what inspired him, about his choice of style for the remix and whether or not he’d remix any music by K. Michelle, who just announced her tour with Banks.
What inspired you to remix this record?
Inspired? Funny thing is that I took it on as a challenge. No one dared me to remix [it] or any thing, I’ve heard the record and thought it would be difficult to remix without living in the current sound of the record. So I challenged myself to create some dope shit out of it and just do my greatest.
How would you define the style of this remix?
I would define it as “Dark Dance”. I say that because my style is self-proclaimed as “Dark Grey” and this has such a different feel from my other remixes which are more described as “Future R&B”. I did about 4 different sets of drums (break beat, 4 on the floor, Hip-Hop and R&B) to give it a feel, I thought would stand out as my own.
You and Azealia Banks are from the same city, and she’s going on tour with K. Michelle soon. Are you a K. Michelle fan? Would you remix a K. Michelle record in the near future?
I wouldn’t say I’m a K. Michelle fan but her writing and singing abilities are grand. I would do a remix, if the lyrics and cadence are right. That’s what usually determines a remix for me.
What’s next?
Original content, visuals and finally — a damn project!
