I’ll call this one an indie-rock and rap crossover. It’s the latest track from Dylan Owen, and it’s a great talking point for how diverse hip-hop can be. To give you an idea, Boston rock artist Animal Flag is featured on the guitar parts to this otherwise lyrical rap song. Owen turns to his usual suspects to give the song a melancholy vibe; he’s got Skinny Atlas on production and Alaska Sun on backing vocals. The twist is in the bold, head-nodding chorus that takes a lot from rock influences.
Lyrically “The Best Fears of Our Lives” deals with the fear of losing the people we love, and being brave in the face of that. It’s safe to say the song is lyrically dense, to the point where it might be tough to appreciate as a casual listen. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any great lines though. It’s hauntingly intense when he starts the track with “I’ll still love you when your parents die/And my parents die/And we’re forced to face this world together terrified”. It’s a challenging and diverse track, but a welcome one from one of New York’s fresh young voices. Check out the song below:
