While it is not new, artist Tekashi69‘s video for his song, “Shinigami” may be the most slept on video of 2015, so far. With scenes alluding to American History X, the video follows Tekashi and his Scumgang mobbing and thrashing through NYC with cuts of anime to accompany the footage. Featuring Tan Boy Bodega Bamz, the Spanish Harlem native killed his verse per usual, adding his flavor to the track. Graphic and raw, the video sends conflicting messages with a voice over speaking to the destructive behaviors of the youth while simultaneously featuring someone shoot up. By the end of the video, you won’t be able to tell whether the artist is for the life he portrays in the video or trying to send a message on the low. We always hear artists talk about being “about that life”, but Tekashi actually proved that he was. While the lifestyle featured in the video can not be condoned, the overall piece itself is definitely an eye catcher. Is this video too real in an industry all about keeping it 100? Are there commercial limits to the realness? Someting to ponder on while you watch Tekashi’s video for his song, “Shinigami” featuring Bodega Bamz below:
