Thanks to the likes of Common, Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West, we’ve always known that Chicago was a hotbed of musical talent. Only recently, however, have we been introduced to a new wave of artists, who have shown the versatility that exists in the city. Chance the Rapper is on fire. Vic Mensa is definitely next up, after catching the attention of West, and we can’t forget about Chicago’s Drill scene, made famous by emcees like Chief Keef and King L.
Meet soulful songstress Lili K, who you might be more hip to than you think.
Lili K, who describes her sound as “soul trap,” is probably most known for her appearances on numerous tracks alongside Chance the Rapper. However, the 23-year-old singer is looking to make a breakthrough of her own, as she readies the release of her debut album Ruby.
After giving us “Tommy” a little while back, Lili K blesses listeners with her new single and video for “I Don’t Want You No More.” With a groovy band backing her up, it’s initially hard to tell how fed up she is with the subject of this song, and that’s what makes this such an awesome tune.
Lili K is a breath of fresh air who embodies a jazz-infused sound that’s nearly extinct from today’s music. Ruby is available April 21st.
