In the last two years Joey Bada$$ has really started to come into his own. While still fairly young and still rising to his full potential, his music has seemingly caught the ear of maybe the most important 16-year-old in the United States. Who you might be asking? Well, Malia Obama of course. Earlier this month, a picture started circling around the web (see above) of none other than The President’s daughter repping a Pro Era T-shirt. Even though the picture is nothing inappropriate, The White House started investigating how the picture was even leaked in the first place. Apparently, the picture was sent through a mutual friend of Malia’s who also happens to be a Pro Era fan.
Regardless of how Barrack and Michelle Obama may feel about their daughters being on social media platforms, this kind of publicity for an artist like Joey Bada$$ is big at this point in his career. With this national attention, his first official upcoming album B4.Da.$$ (dropping Jan 20th) could take him to the places within the industry he’s been waiting for.
This photo is also very important when discussing the country and the hip-hop culture as a whole. Malia may have managed to tear down some of the stereotypical walls boxing in Bada$$ and artists like him. If such an important, adored, and well-mannered role model such as Malia Obama finds Joey’s music appealing, he may be gaining some unexpected fans who view him in a new light and in a way they never imagined. This hopefully won’t be the last time Malia or other people in a position of influence give insight into their true likes and dislikes, as things like this bring us all a lot closer together. With so much pain, anger, injustice and opposite views on life, it’s nice to know that whether you’re getting ready for school, finishing work or assisting your dad in leading the free world, Joey Bada$$ is welcome in your playlist.
Also, according to Bada$$, he was not actually aware it was Malia Obama being photographed upon first or second look, yet after he found out, quickly re-posted the picture himself and is very thankful for the shout-out (watch full video below).
There’s no question the Hip-Hop community is just as excited as Malia Obama about Joey Bada$$ and his new album, so let’s hope he releases his album on January 20th as planned, and who knows? Maybe Joey has a few lines of appreciation ready and maybe Malia will snap a pic of her holding the album once it drops? Time will tell.
