By now, you’ve probably caught wind water of Mick Jenkins by now. He’s in The Source‘s “Unsigned Hype,” he’s getting reviewed by Pitchfork, he has songs with Chance The Rapper, Joey Bada$$, and he was a favorite of ours since Trees & Truths dropped last summer. He’s a new-school wordsmith with some of that old-head grumpiness–but he has an open mind to different flows and flavors that counter balances it nicely–and he’s spitting in his relative comfort zone here, dropping clever lines about showing the light (or here, visine) to the blind.
Someone you may not have heard of is Reggie Bonds. This Milwaukee MC is new to us, but what an introduction. With harsh over-pronunciation and a painstakingly on-point flow, Reggie comes out of the gate blasting with two different verses of impressive, uplifting yet aggressive rhymes. “A piece of shit black kid irritating the skin of these white folks / They pray the shit I kick’s a typo / They brainwashed the youth to think the real niggas is psychos,” he spits, getting increasingly raspy and agitated as he goes. This song is a keeper, to say the least, and Reggie has definitely made his mark on us. Listen to “Ol’ Dirty Bastard” here, at HipHopDX.
