If you aren’t up to speed on Tez McClain, this message in his music will bring you up to speed. His newest single, “Damn Sh!t”, touches on the injustices going on in present day, as well as how the urban community deals with the many challenges they are faced with on a consistent basis.
Here, Tez gives a breakdown behind the song and video’s inspiration:
My dudes Nexx Generation did the track. They did “Womanizer” for Brittany Spears. I was riding around playing the track just freestyling and saying “Damn…Shit”. My girl was like, “Go straight club or turn up with it.” I was like, “Nah, people got to hear something that really mean something.” This was fall 2013 actually, so the Treyvon Martin situation was fresh and a lot of other things. So I just spoke on it. I recorded the record and my man Irv from Nexx Generation called me and was like “Yo, Tez. I’ll make you a new beat ’cause I’m about to give that track you got to Wiz”. I was like, “Aight my dude.” I couldn’t really get mad at my man for going for the check. The story gets interesting ’cause that week I went and performed the record at a show, Irv must’ve heard about the performance ’cause he hit me the next day and was like, “I’ll make Wiz some new shit, rock out with that joint.” I’m glad he said that ’cause he didn’t know we shot the video for it the night prior, right after the performance.
As for as the video goes, my dude Enrique Batiste shot it. I came up with the concept and was inspired by the movie “The Network” and the “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” video from Hov. Killer Mike let me use his barbershop for a scene and was too real for being in the video. Mind you, this was done last November..way before Ferguson. The shit I’m speaking on is always gonna be an issue until we all do something about it. -Tez
