Yesterday we got Kendrick’s first solo music since good kid m.A.A.d. city and an interview on Power 106 with Big Boy. Throughout our hip-hop nation, it seemed all anyone could talk about was K.Dot’s return. Regardless of the reactions, many of which were lukewarm at best, the fact that the TDE wordsmith had everyone’s immediate and undivided attention speaks to just how high on the totem pole he sits. When people drop everything to listen, it’s generally when someone like Kanye or Beyoncé drop something, and while he’s not there yet, he’s on the way. All this is to say–when’s the last time you saw an MC near Kendrick’s status fuck around and spit, for one, a mean written on the radio, or for two, continue to rap off the top of his head for the next six minutes. While most of his freestyle doesn’t dazzle, you have to respect Kendrick for going up to bat and not treating it like a joke as a way of getting out of the hot seat. This is the kind of thing that makes the Compton kid the people’s champ. That, and the fact that he dedicated his first single as a platinum artist to trying to help people.
Update: all of this became void when we learned Big Boy wrote every lyric of Kendrick’s career.
