With the onslaught of political action and rightful protests taking place in Ferguson, Missouri over Michael Brown’s murder, it seems only fitting that music artists respond to the situation in the best way they know how: through song. This week, we’ve gotten releases from J.Cole and Luke Tailor; yesterday, Ms. Lauryn Hill weighed in. “Black Rage” has been performed live by Hill since her 2012 Life is Good tour, but never recorded and released – until now. The song combines the popular show tune melody of “My Favorite Things” with gripping, thought-provoking lyrics á la Nina Simone’s 1964 release, “Mississippi Goddam.” Fifty years later, it seems we’ve come full circle.
