Strange names for celebrity babies are nothing new, but you might be surprised how much the hip-hop community has contributed to that. As you’ll see from this list, often artists that are creative with their craft are just as creative with the naming of their offspring. Here’s a list of the children of hip-hop with the most “unique” names.
Future Zahir Wilburn (Future and Ciara)
It is only fitting that we start with the latest addition to the hip-hop family. On May 19th, Ciara and her fiancé Future welcomed home their son Future Zahir Wilburn. Yes, his name is actually Future. It is not a nickname. At least it’s just as bizarre as his father’s name, Nayvadius.
North West (Kanye West and Kim Kardashian)
When rumors began to circulate that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian were planning to name their firstborn North, the world thought that it was one big joke. It turned out that the rumors were true once the newlywed’s bundle of joy was born on June 15, 2013. Is it safe to say that Kanye came up with the name?
Rocket Air Williams (Pharrell Williams)
Pharrell is known for being a fan of space and intergalactic elements, so when he and wife Helen Lasichanh had their first son, it was no surprise that his name was Rocket. In a recent interview with Oprah, Pharrell revealed that Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Herbie Hancock served as inspiration for his son’s name.
King Coy Deel (DMX)
DMX wanted to avoid giving his children any simple names, which explains why he named one of his sons King Coy Deel. It seems like X was trying to prepare his son for a career in MMA with this name.
Egypt Dean (Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys)
Naming children after countries and continents is nothing new, but it was still interesting to discover that Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys named their son Egypt. Alicia stated that she chose her son’s name after experiencing a breakthrough in Egypt.
Seven Sirius Benjamin (Andre 3000 and Erykah Badu)
Seven has two of the coolest artists in their respective genres as parents. However, it was not cool of his parents to name him after a number. (Note: this will not be the last time you’ll see Erykah Badu on this list)
Cash Worth (Chip Tha Ripper)
Cash Worth is similar to North West; the name is so comical that it is hard to believe that it is true. Just imagine being a teacher taking attendance and you see “Worth, Cash” on the list.
Puma Sabti Curry (The D.O.C. and Erykah Badu)
Once again, we have Ms. Badu. Here, we have her child with yet another lyrical legend, The D.O.C. Erykah Badu is a creative and unique artist, and that is clearly shown through her children’s names.
Mars Merkaba Thedford (Jay Electronica and Erykah Badu)
Speaking, again, of Erykah, next up is Mars. Just like Pharrell, Erykah Badu and Jay Electronica like galactic-inspired names.
Blue Ivy Carter (Jay Z and Beyonce)
Who better to end this list than the most popular celebrity baby, Blue Ivy Carter? Everyone refused to believe that Queen Bey and Hov named their firstborn Blue, and it’s still unclear as to why they chose the name. However, it has been reported that “Ivy” derives from the Roman Numeral “IV,” which is significant to her parents: Jay Z‘s birthday is December 4th, Beyoncé‘s is September 4th, and the couple was married on April 4th. (Beyoncé’s fourth album was also entitled 4.)
