L’Orange provides a lush, wailing beat that could soundtrack the twists and turns of a crime noir, and Homeboy Sandman just goes. For two lengthy verses, Boy Sand takes us through the meeting, mating, and collapse of a fling. Few descriptions besides “listen to this,” though, do it justice. “Mind Vs. Matter” is endlessly dense with moments of real, flawed, beautiful life and one sharp, self-aware man’s interpretation. Sentiment after sentiment rings true–there are too many good moments to fit into this writeup. There are also very few rhymes in the lines, especially considering that this is a Sandman song. It feels that, especially with the urgency of the second verse’s closing, the words, the story, the ideas, were just so important, and the rhymes just had to wait their turn, until they could enter naturally, almost inconspicuously. It was a wise choice: “Mind Vs. Matter” feels full of natural brilliance, wit and wisdom, and will definitely be around these parts for year end lists.
