Whether through symbolism, anxiety, curiosity, irony or lived experiences, death inevitably finds a way into all genres. Unfortunately, hip-hop largely seems to have encountered death in the form of lived experiences; these encounters are so common, in fact, that songs of mourning in hip-hop could probably be a subgenre. Adding to this extensive catalog of loss and misfortune, Memphis rapper Yo Gotti teams up with J. Cole to detail a person who’s so used to death that he’s lost all emotion. It’s not a new story, but that’s paradoxically what makes it powerful. This story is way more common than it should be. If that’s not horrifying, you’re probably just a hardened cynic.
