Before Run the Jewels there was R.A.P. Music, Killer Mike‘s 2012 solo album. El-P was present as a producer, but “Ghetto Gospel” is a reminder that Mike was more of a solo act. In the video, Mike‘s character copes with the tempting realities of a sinful world, seeking redemption though church, biblical scriptures and baptism. The song and the video’s imagery might have limited appeal if you’re not Christian, but at least Mike seems committed to the topic. There are no gimmicks or inside jokes here.
