Although we usually tend to discuss music in terms of skill and personal appeal, there’s a lot of unacknowledged labor embedded in the songs that come our way. Engineers, producers, executive producers, song writers, interns, studio owners, and more play an integral role in the songs we love, in addition to the primary recording artist. In “Don’t Forget About Me,” New Orleans singer August Alsina reminds us that the layers of labor go even deeper than just the typically overlooked workers. As he shows in the song’s verses and its epilogue, there’s also an emotional labor at work. For Alsina specifically, it’s the fairly recent death of his brother.
Although the song is titled, “Don’t Forget About Me,” it’s not about Alsina, himself. Rather, it’s about the myriad intimate connections that he must strive to embody; it’s about how all the people he’s connected to all insist (and have the right to insist), “Don’t forget about me,” as they see him ascend to the top. Watch the video below and never forget.
