Is it 2007 already? Fat Joe, after a four month stint in prison for tax evasion, recently teamed up with 50 Cent for the DJ Kay Slay-produced “Free Again,” a soulful cut featuring strong wordplay from both Joe and 50. The track unites two early-2000s New York icons who famously feuded with one another back in 2005, an episode culminating in 50 releasing a fake “funeral” video for Fat Joe via YouTube because he claimed he had “killed his career.” In case that wasn’t enough to get you reminiscing, 50 adds to the nostalgia by poking fun at Kanye West‘s newfound affinity for skirts. Graduation vs. Curtis, anyone?
Regardless, it’s nice to see these two still have plenty of energy and have put the past behind them. Additionally, it could be a sign that both are looking to get back in the game. Kay Slay‘s minimal beat gives way to some good old-fashioned raw New York City rap, and no self-respecting fan could ever have a problem with that. Check out the song below.
